Kind hearted employees of Stertil UK Limited decided to raise funds for the Bee Hive – the first special Sixth Form Vocational centre in Northamptonshire – by collecting money that would have been spent on sending Christmas cards. As a result, a total of £225 was raised which was then matched by the company to take the total up to £450.
Launched in October 2013, the Bee Hive is a full time day provision that provides individualised learning experiences designed to develop key employability and supported living skills for students with moderate learning difficulties and ASD needs. The organisation strives to develop young people’s independence by providing an enriched personal and social development programme, independent living skills, travel training and employability skills.
A key member of the Bee Hive team is a Work Experience Co-ordinator who has achieved great success in securing work experience placements for students within the local community.
Facilities at the Bee Hive are open to the local community and general public to provide an environment to help students develop the skills to move confidently into post school life. They work alongside staff and volunteers in the cafe, shops, kitchen, conferencing and ‘Wellbeeing’ areas, learning a variety of duties in these different environments thereby raising their self esteem and confidence.
“Everyone does a fantastic job at the Bee Hive,” says Tina Tooley, Project Team Leader at Stertil UK. “All of us at Stertil were keen to support the ongoing work because it’s such a vibrant centre where students and staff have a really positive ‘can do – will do’ attitude. In fact, the moment you walk in, you realise that the whole place is just buzzing!”
